Week of December 3rd
We are continuing to work on staying on task for our social skill. We will be reading the story Dear Juno working on drawing conclusions and the long o sound. In Language Arts will will be learning about verbs with singular and plural nouns. We will also continue to work on paragraph writing. In Science we will be studying matter. In math we will finish up Topic 8 on 2 digit addition with regrouping and move on to 2 digit regrouping in subtraction. We will have a special visitor spending Friday with us. She is excited to meet everyone!!!

Week of Nov. 26th
Our social skill for this week is staying on task. We will be working hard on this as we learn more about author's purpose and using ee, ea, and y. In Language Arts we will be working on verbs, expository writing and writing a paragraph. In math we will be spending time adding 2 digit numbers and learning how to regroup. Science will be spent learning how living things change and grow.

Week of November 19th
This will be a short yet fun week. We will continue to learn about Native Americans and Pilgrims. We will be reading stories about the first Thanksgiving and working on sequencing when we make pumpkin pie. Look for directions written by your child on how to do this. We will be working on fact and opinions that people may have about turkeys. In art this week we will be making Native American shields, pottery, and jewelry. In math we will finish Topic 7 and mental subtraction. Our 2nd grade room parents are planning a Fall Festival for us this week. It should be a blast! Have a Happy Thanksgiving!!!

Week of Nov. 12th
This week we are celebrating National Education Week. Our Boystown skill for the week is Asking for help. In Reading we are reading A Turkey for Thanksgiving and working on drawing conclusions and long a words with ai and ay. In Language Arts we are writing narrative paragraphs and learning about possessive nouns. Social Studies and Science time will be spent learning about Veteran's Day, plants and animals habitats, and food webs, and Native Americans. We are working on mental math strategies for subtraction. Please come to our music program Tuesday night at the Havelone Center.

Week of November 5th
Our social skill for this week is having a conversation. We will be reading the Bremen Town Musicians and be working on author's purpose. Plural nouns with spelling changes will be focused on in Language Arts and Spelling. We are also working on writing a narrative paragraph. In Math we are working on Mentally adding numbers. Social Studies will be spent learning about the election process. In Science we will be learning how plants and animals live together and what they need. Week of Oct. 22nd
Our Boys Town skill this week is Accepting Compliments. Look at the person, use a pleasant voice, and say thank you. We will be reading the story Turtle's Race with Beaver and working on r-controlled vowels and sequencing. Language Arts will focus on singular and plural nouns. In Science this week we will be doing several fun experiments with pumpkins. Reminder: There is no school on Friday!

Week of October 15th
This week we will be reading Ronald Morgan Goes to Bat. We will focus on contractions, realism, fantasy, and sequencing. In Language Arts we will be working on proper nouns, and writing a descriptive paragraph. We are going to start working on our class book that we will be publishing. It takes some time to complete this project. In Math we will be finishing up our place value chapter and start money. Please take some time to review the value of coins with your child. They will be expected to count coin combinations to a dollar. We are now learning about vertebrates and how mammals adapt to their environment. Our Boys Town social skill for the week is making an apology.

Week of Oct. 8th
This week we will be reading about Tara and Tiree. The skills we will focus on are sequencing, r-controlled vowels, and predicting. Nouns will be the focus for Language Arts. Christopher Columbus Day will be celebrated on Monday and then in Science we will be learning about spiders. In Math we continue to work on place value and comparing 2 digit numbers.

Week of October 1st
We have parent teacher conferences on Tuesday and Thursday this week. I look forward to visiting with you about your child. We will spend the week reviewing the Boys Town social skills we have covered so far this year. In reading we will be reading The Strongest One, working on consonant digraphs, realism, and fantasy. In Language Arts we will focus on commands and exclamations. We will have some fun creating insect models from clay and do some experiments with Hissing Cockroaches. Fire Prevention will also be discussed this week. In math we will be working on place value, reading, and writing numbers. It should be an exciting week.

Week of September 24th
Our Boys Town social skill of the week is How to get the teachers attention. We will be practicing this along with the other skills we have already learned. In reading we will be exploring the desert and reading A Walk in the Desert. As we do this we will be learning about words with inflected endings, finding the main idea, and details. In Language Arts we will be learning how to write a story with a beginning, middle, and end. Learning how to write questions and statements will also be addressed this week. In math we continue to work on subtraction strategies. In Social Studies and Science we will focus on Johnny Appleseed, and snails. It should be a week full of new learning's!

Week of Sept. 17th
As we continue our exploration unit, we will be reading Henry and Mudge and the Starry Night. Consonant blends, characters, and setting will be our focus. In Language Arts we will be working on predicates of sentences. We will be finishing up on addition strategies and starting subtraction strategies in Math. Science will consist of learning about invertebrates focusing on insects. I am excited to do an art project learning about the famous artist Peter Max. I am hoping to post some of our students art work. So keep watching!

Week of Sept. 10th
This week we will be exploring space in reading. As we do that we will be learning about long vowels, main idea, and details. In Language Arts we will be learning about subjects in sentences and the writing process. In Science and Social Studies we will be finishing up our plant unit and learning more about communities. Math time will be spent focusing on strategies that will help us learn our addition facts. It will be a busy week!

Week of September 4th
This week in reading we will be reading the story Iris and Walter, working on short vowel sounds, characters and setting. In Language Arts we are working on sentences and how to build a great sentence. In Math we are working on understanding addition and subtraction and mastering our facts. We have planted corn, milo, wheat, and soybeans in Science and are learning about plant parts and what they do. In Social Studies we are learning about our world. We will have our first spelling test on Friday. Don't forget to come to our open house on Thursday from 6 to 7. I'm anxious to meet you!

Week of April 23rd
This week we will be reading the story Jingle Dancer and working on character, setting, and plot. We will be focusing on the prefixes mid and mis. It will be fun to share our dinosaur reports and dioramas. I hope to post some pictures of their projects. The students were so creative. We will continue to work on 3 digit addition and subtraction with regrouping. This week we enjoyed skyping with our pen pals from Stoddard Elementary.

Week of April 16th
* Please bring a shoe box by Monday so we can make dinosaur dioramas. This week we will be reading Cowboys. We will be working on the suffixes less and ness, and cause and effect. In Language Arts we will be focusing on using commas in compound sentences and writing dinosaur reports. Science and Social Studies will be spent learning about where dinosaurs lived in the world, creating a dinosaur out of clay, and making a home for our dinosaur. It should be fun!! In math we will start working on subtracting 3 digit numbers.

We are off to a busy week. In reading and language arts we will be reading A Birthday Basket for Tia. The skills we are working on include drawing conclusions, commas, and the syllables tion and ture. Be ready to do 3 digit addition in math. On Tuesday Jane Esau will be coming to start our embryology unit. 21 days until the chicks are suppose to hatch. I hope we can be good mother hens. We will continue learning more about dinosaurs. Week of April 2nd
This week we will be reading the story Red, White, Blue and working on words with inflected endings and Fact and Opinion. In Language Arts we will take a look at how to use quotation marks correctly. In Science and Social Studies we are kicking off our dinosaur unit. The kids are super excited! We are continuing to work on place value and will be taking our essential learnings test at the end of the week. Remember no school on Friday!
