Week of Dec. 7th

This week we will be reading about George Washington Carver, working on words with comparative endings and cause and effect.  We will be working on the verbs am, is, are, and was.  The students will be writing about an animal for their 2nd quarter writing assessment.  In Science we will be learning about heat, light, and sound energy.  In math we will continue to work on addition and subtraction with regrouping.

Week of Nov. 23rd.

This is going to be a very fun week.  We will be baking pumpkin pie, creating Native American art with clay and continuing to learn about the pilgrims.  We will also start subtraction with regrouping.  On Tuesday we will be having a fall party in the afternoon.  Thanks so much to the parents who are planning this.  There will be no spelling test this week.

Week of Nov. 9th

This week we will be reading the story Dear Juno while working on the long o sound spelled with o, oa, and ow.  We will also be working on drawing conclusions.  In Language Arts we will be finishing our narrative paragraphs and working on verbs with singular and plural nouns.  In math we will begin learning how to add a 2 digit number with regrouping.  We will take some time on Nov. 11th to learn about Veteren's Day and why we celebrate this holiday.  The week will be busy and we continue to practice for out upcoming music program.  It will be a great week.

Week of Nov. 2nd

This week we are starting a new unit in reading.  We will spend the next 5 weeks learning and reading about creative ideas.  We will be reading the story Pearl and Wagner, Two Good Friends while learning how to read words with ee, ea, and y.  We will continue to work on the comprehension skill of author's purpose.  In Language Arts we will be working on verbs and writing a narrative paragraph.  In Social Studies we will be learning about the First Americans focusing on the Plains Natives.  Our Math time will be spent learning strategies to help us subtract 2 digit numbers mentally.  It will be a busy week.

Week of Oct. 26th

This week we will be reading A Turkey for Thanksgiving while working on ai and ay words and drawing conclusions.  In Language Arts we will continue to work on our class book.  If you would like to order a book, please return those by Monday the 26th.  We will also work on possessive nouns.  In Science we will be conducting some experiments with pumpkins including counting and graphing how many seeds are in a pumpkin.  In Math we are working on strategies to help us solve problems mentally.  Please visit my blog at mrshoffmanblog.blogspot.com.  I have links to many activities.  I just added Spelling City which is a great way to practice their spelling words.

Week of Oct. 19th

NO SCHOOL MONDAY!  The teachers will be participating in staff development.  Enjoy some time off.  This week we will be reading the play The Bremen Town Musicians while working on plurals and author's purpose.  We are continuing to write descriptive paragraphs for our class book that will be published.  I have found a company in Kansas that will publish for classrooms.  The boys and girls are very excited to become authors.   Please be looking for information on how to order a book for your child in the next week or so.  In Science we will finish up learning about habitats and how living things change and grow.  In Math we are working on counting coin combinations.  Today we kick off our school fundraiser!  Packets will be coming home with more information.

Learning about reptiles! It's a snake!


Week of Oct. 12th

Monday we will be celebrating Columbus Day by learning about Christopher Columbus and his adventures to the Americas.  This week we will be reading the story Turtles Race with Beaver while working on r controlled vowels and sequencing.  In Language Arts we will be working on writing a class book to be published.  We will also work on singular and plural nouns.  In math we will continue to work on counting coin combinations up to $1.00.  In Science we are focusing on plants and animals in their environments.  It's going to be a busy week!

Week of Oct. 5th

This week we will be reading the story Ronald Morgan Goes to Bat  while learning about contractions, realism, and fantasy.  We will be completing our first quarter writing assessment as well as working on proper nouns.    In Math we will finish up place value and move on to counting money.  In Science we will be learning about animal groups and how they adapt.  I appreciate everyone coming to conferences last week.  We had 100%  attendance!  That is great.  Thanks for making an effort to show how much you care about your child and their school!

Week of Sept.28th

This week a new unit in reading.  All the stories will be based on the theme working together.  We will be reading Tara and Tiree, Fearless Friends while working on sequencing and r controlled vowels.  In Language Arts we will be learning about nouns and writing a story in sequence.  Spiders will keep our Science time engaging.  We will be doing a pumpking art project to get ready for October.  In Math we continue to work on place value.  We will be comparing numbers, extending number patterns and learning about odd and even numbers.  I enjoyed visiting with those of you who were able to make it to conferences.  Thanks for coming.

Week of Sept. 21st

This week we will be reading the play The Strongest One  while working on consonant digraphs, realism, and fantasy.  We will also be working on commands and exclamations.  In Science we will be making a model of an insect and learning about snails, slugs, and earthworms.  In Math we will start learning about place value.  Please come visit me at parent teacher conferences on Tuesday and Thursday evening at your scheduled time.  NO SCHOOL FRIDAY!

Week of September 14th

This week our reading goals will focus on reading words with inflected endings, main idea, and detail.  We will be exploring the desert by reading A Walk in the Desert.  In Language Arts we will be learning about statements and questions.  In Social Studies we will learn about Johnny Appleseed and complete an art project with Johnny as the focus.  We have an exciting week in Science as we will get up and personal with some Madagascar Hissing Cockroaches.  We will be finding out just how strong these insects are.  On Thursday we will celebrate Constitution Day by learning about our country's constitution.  In math we will continue working on strategies to use in addition and subtraction.  We will also do a little algebra and find the missing number in an addition and subtraction problem.  Please note that the spelling list for the next week are stapled to their spelling test.  It will go home each Friday.   If they lose their list, just check the blog.  The words are listed on the right hand side.

Sept. 9, 2015

Hi - and welcome to my blog.  I will be updating this weekly with events that are happening in our classroom.  Each week the spelling list is posted on this site.  I have also added some websites that are great to use at school and home.  Your child can access these from this site. Please become a follower so you can be updated each week.

This week are are reading the story Henry and Mudge and the Starry Night.  We are working on consonant blends, character, and setting.  In Language Arts we are learning about predicates and what makes a good sentence.  It is insect exploration time in Science as we learn about the body parts of and insect.  They do know a great song about this.  Maybe they could teach you.  Math time is spent learning many subtraction strategies.  In Art we created Lady Liberty in honor of Patriots Day and Constitution Day.  They are beautiful!
