Week of Dec. 9th
This week we will be reading A Weed is A Flower while working on cause and effect. We will also be working on spelling words with er and est. In Language Arts we will be working with being verbs and writing a paragraph. In Science we will be studying energy, learning about heat, light and sound. The middle school show choir will be visiting us on Friday.

Week of November 25th
This week we will be baking pumpkin pies and writing how to make a pumpkin pie. While we are learning about turkeys, we will work on fact and opinion. We will continue to learn about the pilgrims and Native Americans and create some pottery or jewelry like the Native Americans did. In Math we will continue to subtract 2 digit numbers with regrouping.

Week of Nov. 18
This week we will be reading Anansi Goes Fishing while working on compound words and cause and effect. In Language Arts we will be working on verbs for the present, past, and future. In math we will continue to work on 2 digit addition with regrouping. Social Studies will include learning about Native Americans and Pilgrims. At the end of the week we will be having a meal like the pilgrims did on the Mayflower.

Week of Nov. 11th
Next week in reading, we will be discussing the
many different ways we can communicate. The students will be reading a
realistic fiction story called Dear Juno. We will be working on
the comprehension skill of drawing conclusions. We will work on the
comprehension strategy of visualizing. In phonics and spelling we will be
focusing on words with the long o sound ( spelled o, oa, or ow). In
language arts we will work on singular and plural nouns. We will also
continue working on writing a narrative paragraph. We will learn about
Veteran's Day on Monday. Second graders will continue learning about
Native Americans next week during social studies. We will especially
focus on the Plains Natives who used to live in our region. During math
class we will learn to add two-digit numbers to two-digit numbers, regrouping
as needed. Have a great weekend. Please keep encouraging your child
to read at least 15 minutes every night and study their spelling words

Week of November 4th
We will be reading an animal fantasy called Pearl and Wagner Two Good Friends. We will be working on author's purpose as well as long e spellings with an e, ee, ea or y. In Language Arts wil will be working on verbs and narrative paragraphs. In Science we will finish up animals learning about animal life cycles. In Math we are working on subtraction and mental math.

Officer Soldo and Soter
Thanks so much to Officer Soldo for teaching us about his dog Soter and how he searches for drugs and missing people. It was a great way for us to celebrate Red Ribbon week and continue learning about how animals help people!

Week of Oct. 28th
This week we will be reading A Turkey for Thanksgiving and working on Drawing Conclusions. We will also be working on words with the long a sound using ai and ay. We will continue working on our class book and learning about possessive nouns. On Halloween we will be decorating some gourds and learning about Halloween safety. We will also have a special visitor this week. A police officer will be bringing his search dog to help explain how animals can help us. In Science we will be learning about what causes a food web to change. Have a happy and safe Halloween!

Week of Sept. 23rd
Please come visit me at parent teacher conferences Monday or Tuesday evening at your scheduled time. Remember there is no school Friday because of this. This week we will be reading the story The Strongest One while learning about consonant digraphs and realism and fantasy. Language Arts will be spent learning about commands and exclamations. In art we will be making insect models out of clay. During Science this week we have a special guest coming to share her Madagascar Hissing Cockroaches. We will also be learning about snails and earthworms. It is going to be so much fun. In Math we will be starting place value. It should be a busy week.

This week we will be taking a walk in the desert while learning about inflected endings, main idea, and details. We will be learning about statements and questions and writing stories with a beginning, middle, and end. In Math we are working on subtraction facts and finding missing numbers. Science will be focused on comparing moths and butterflies. Social Studies will be spent learning about the Constitution and Johnny Appleseed.

Welcome 2013-2014 School Year!
I would like to welcome you to my blog. Each week I hope to post what is happening in our classroom so you are able to ask your child questions about school. This week our Boys Town Social skill is Greeting Others. We will be reading the story Henry and Mudge and the Starry Night while working on character and setting. In phonics we will review short and long vowels and begin working on consonant blends. In Language Arts we will be learning about predicates. We will be starting our invertebrate unit in Science. Keep reading and practicing your spelling words each night.

Week of May 6th
This week we will be reading Jingle Dancer while working on character, plot, and setting. We will be focusing on the prefixes mis and mid and working on paragraph writing. In Science we are continuing to learn about the life cycle of a chicken and hopefully will have some chicks peeping this week! On Friday is our annual Walk the track day for diabetes. It is a fun filled day full of activities promoting fitness. Please feel welcome to stop and see us at the new complex at the high school.

In math we will continue working on 3 digit addition and subtraction in Math. Thursday is our fieldtrip to Morrill Hall and Memorial Stadium. It will be a blast!

This week we will be reading Just Like Josh Gibson while working on contractions and comparing and contrasting. We will be researching dinosaurs and will start writing reports on a favorite dinosaur. We will also be working on using capital letters appropriately. In Math we are working on place value, number patterns, and comparing 3 digit numbers. Science and Social Studies will focus on fossils and using map skills to locate where dinosaur fossils have been found in the United States.

Week of March 11th
This week we will be reading the story One Dark Night while learning about prefixes and sequencing. We will be working on add-on stories and pronouns for one and more than one. In Math we are working on telling time to the nearest 5 minutes. We will continue to learn about the impacts of weather and how to stay safe. Thursday will be the last day for our student teacher Miss Rambour. We will miss her greatly! Congratulations go out to her as she will be teaching 3rd grade next fall at Saint Josephs. There will be no school on Friday.

Week of Feb. 18th
This week we will be reading the story Helen Keller and the Big Storm. We will be learning about words with the vowel sound in moon. Fact and Opinion will also be studied. In Language Arts we are learning about adverbs and how to write a response paragraph. In math we continue to work on measurement exploring perimeter and area. In Social Studies we will be learning about President's Day. Our Science class will focus on learning about My Food Plate.

Week of Feb.11th
This week we are welcoming Fax Gilbert to Beatrice as our artist in residence. Our students will meet Fax on Tuesday then have the opportunity to visit and work with him several times throughout the week.We are reading the story "I like Where I am" and working on the diphthongs oi/oy and theme and plot in reading. Remember that Thursday afternoon is our Valentines Day party. Please refer to the list of candy that is allowed at school, which was sent home last week before bringing treats to school. In social studies we are going to learn about the Chinese New Year and in science we are learning about caring for our teeth and gums.We are beginning a new math unit this week in which we will learn about measurements.

Oh my goodness! It's February and conference time! Please stop by on Monday or Thursday at your assigned time. This week we will be reading about Frogs while working on ou and ow dipthongs and comparing and contrasting. Adjectives continue to be our focus in Language Arts. In Social Studies we will be learning about American Symbols and creating posters. We will be covering topics in health such as how to take care of our eyes, and head lice. Week of Jan. 28th
Wow January has flown by. In Math we will be finishing our Geometry Topic and moving on the Fractions!! Health will be spent focusing on the body systems and learning what they do. We will be reading about The Life Cycle of the Pumpkin and working on words with oo and u. We will spend time working on fact and opinion and learning some new vocabulary words. In Language Arts we will be writing a paragraph about what it will be like when we are 100 and continue our work on adjectives. Next week we will be celebrating our 100th day of school so please remember to bring you 100th day snack!!!!

Week of Jan. 21st
There is no school on Monday in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. We spent last week learning about how important this man was in the United States of America. This week we will be reading The Quilt Story and work on comparing and contrasting, syllables c + le. Our focus in Language Arts will be adjectives. In Math we will continue geometry focusing on translations, reflections, rotations, symmetry, plane shapes, and solid figures. In Health we will start learning about the human body and systems. Arts projects will include learning about Jim Dine and painting some heart art. Please welcome Miss Ellen Rambour. She will be student teaching in 2nd grade for the next 10 weeks. We are so excited to have her.
